Weighted GPA Calculator
There is no national weighted GPA. Pick the system your district actually uses.
One of the few states that standardises weighting, at +1.0 for AP, IB and CIE. It was cut from +2.0 with the 2015–16 freshman class — and this is exactly why the UNC System can accept a transcript weighted GPA at face value. Source, verified 2026-08-25.

The same transcript under every system

A student in Chicago and a student in Palm Beach County can hand an admissions reader the same coursework and the same letter grades, and the numbers on their transcripts will differ by more than half a point. Neither transcript is wrong.
Three mechanisms, not one
Every weighted GPA calculator online implements the first of these and stops. The other two are in live use, and they do not agree with it.
Adding a bonus
The familiar one: take the 4.0 grade point and add a constant for the course level. North Carolina sets it statewide at +1.0 for AP, IB and CIE and +0.5 for honours; Chicago Public Schools uses +2.0 and +1.0, which is why its scale tops out at 6.0.
Multiplying the grade
Palm Beach County scales the whole grade by a factor instead: a flat ×1.5 for AP, AICE, IB and dual enrolment. That makes an AP A worth 6.0, matching Chicago. But an AP D is worth 1.5 here against 2.0 under an additive rule. Multiplying rewards strong grades in hard courses and punishes weak ones; adding rewards taking the course at all.
Publishing a grid
Chicago Public Schools does not describe a bonus at all. Board Policy 605.13 prints a table: A is worth 4, 5 or 6 by course level, B is 3, 4 or 5, C is 2, 3 or 4 — and then D is 1 and F is 0 at every level. The weighting simply stops at the bottom of the scale, so an honours D earns exactly what a regular D earns. Model that district as "+1.0 for honours" and you overpay every D on the transcript.
Colorado's Sand Creek High School is a third variant again — honours courses on a 4.5-point scale, AP on 5.0 — but it publishes only the ceilings, not the full mapping, so it is not offered as a preset here. Guessing the middle of someone's grading table produces a number that looks precise and is invented.
Some districts make you pass to keep the bonus
Fairfax County grants the additional weight only when the course is passed. Fail an AP class there and you carry the difficulty with none of the credit — the same F that would still earn +1.0 in North Carolina scores a flat zero. Switch between those two presets above with an F in an AP course and the difference appears immediately.
A state can cap what a district grants
Florida statute §1009.531 limits the Bright Futures weighting to 0.5 per course regardless of what the district does, and requires report cards to warn students that this GPA is not the transcript GPA. A Florida student therefore has at least two official weighted GPAs at once, and they are meant to differ.
Does the number survive admissions?
The popular answer is that colleges always recalculate, so the weighted number is meaningless. That is not true, and the exceptions are large.

Two things stand out. The UNC System accepts the transcript figure across all sixteen universities, which is possible precisely because North Carolina standardised weighting statewide. And the schools that do recalculate contradict each other: Florida adds +0.5 for honours and dual enrolment, Georgia adds nothing for either, and Michigan strips weighting altogether.
So the honest framing is not "colleges ignore it". It is that the weighted number is authoritative where your district's rule governs — class rank, Latin honours, state scholarship thresholds, and the systems that read transcripts directly — and advisory everywhere else.
Districts say so themselves
This is not an outside criticism. Two districts warn their own students in writing:

Texas is mid-change, and it is worth watching
Texas Senate Bill 1191 (2025) changed the statute from may to shall: the commissioner must develop a standard method districts have to use, with AP, IB, OnRamps and academic dual credit weighted equally. The implementing rule was still unadopted as of 2026-08-25, and as proposed it fixes only the ordering of weights, not the numbers; districts would still choose those. If it lands, it reaches students entering grade 7 in 2027–28.
What this page will not tell you
There is no national database of district weighting policies, and building one is not worth attempting: policies live in PDFs and board minutes, they change without notice, and several of the district pages we checked still display superseded rules alongside current ones. The presets here are a small set of verified examples, each linked to the document it came from and dated. If your district is not among them, pick the mechanism that matches and set the values yourself. The mechanism matters more than the constant.
